At the beginning of the thesis, I knew it was better for me to do it in a company. First, the working experience at the company would be an eye- opener for me, since I haven’t got any working experience related to my programme before. Secondly, I was curious about how what I have learned could be used in reality. At last, it would be possible to have a chance entering the company I would make my thesis at. I chose to do my thesis with universitymade this choice because the university offers a wide variety of research projects, including research related to my field, and they can suggest a topic based on my own interests. I think it is much easier to cooperate and handle with only two parties not involving a third party like a company. What have you benefited from this experience? From this experience, I have acquired a higher degree of maturity. It has proved me that I have mastered my fields and that I was capable of carrying out an academic research project in both independent and dependent ways. As we were working in pairs, it taught me how to lead and be led by someone other than the supervisor. It also taught me to adapt or change myself to get along under the surrounding circumstances. What tips would you give to future students from your experience? I would suggest finding the topic that you are interested in first. Link ABIt is an excellent possibility for us to connect with the academic world and to have state of the art knowledge applied to our processes. Could you briefly describe your role as a supervisor? Being a supervisor is for me about commitment. The task is to make sure the students are able to gather sufficient data and information and that they get connected with the right people within the organisation needed for their assignment. At the same time you must be careful not to present answers or ready solutions to their task. When accepting the role as a supervisor you must be willing and prepared to put in the time and effort required to support the students in their work. It is important to make yourself available for meetings and answer questions that arise during the process. What do you expect students to contribute with through their Master's thesis? I expect students to bring an up- to- date theoretic framework and to apply these theories when executing their task. I also expect them to take the opportunity to provide an analysis of the problem from a different and fresh angle. Coming from the outside as a student, it allows you to question and challenge any “old truths” that might exist within the organisation. Supervisor from Chalmers: Pehr- Ola Pahl. It is therefore important for the supervisor to be available to the students and prepared to give feedback when needed. Also, in most cases, the students are aware of what has to be done but need some encouragement to finalize their work. How do you think the student can decide whether they should do the thesis at university or at a company? For a student, the difference between working for a company and for a department at the university may seem to be large. However, depending on the preferences of the student, the research problem can be defined in a similar way, the main difference being the working location. A large part of the research made on Chalmers is applied research, which means that there is great support from industry and that most researchers are working closely with the major companies in Sweden. Working for a department may also mean to be involved in a research project. For the student who is interested in a research career it may be a chance to jump- start a new career. The most important choice for the student is whether the topic of the Master thesis is right based on the experience that he or she has. Ask yourself: Does the underlying problem and research questions reflect my interests; Do I find the area interesting; and do I have the right profile (or can I team- up with someone to cover the field of research). If so, don’t hesitate to go for it. Text: Tingting Li. Edited by: Oana Georgescu. Photos: Private Related Links.
